Sculptris Hulk

In my excitement for the release of The Avengers I decided to post some renders of a work-in-progress Hulk I’ve been working on now and then in Sculptris.  He’s definitely still really blobby in a lot of places, including hair and lower body, and I’m not sure he’ll ever get finished as I’ve moved on to other sculpts in Zbrush (which I hope to start posting soon).  He’s a classic era, Kirby-inspired Hulk.

He was rendered in Blender using the new Cycles render engine, which I am really impressed with, and looking forward to exploring more.

Character Designs In Sculptris

Some character designs for a comic project, created in Sculptris.  These are all works-in-progress (the woman, for instance, will not stay bald), and will likely end up as the basis for digital paintings. I see sculpture becoming more and more a part of my illustration work, and I have another sculpt or two — at least one a familiar character — in the works for that purpose.

Video: Sweet Tooth In Sculptris (Work-In-Progress)

This is one of a few things I’ve been working on in Sculptris. Gus — whose nickname is Sweet Tooth — is the main character in a fantastic comic by talented Canadian creator Jeff Lemire.

If this is your first time hearing about it, it’s well worth checking out: A poignant yet harsh post-apocalyptic tale featuring human/animal hybrid children, and a cast of adult characters basically either scrambling to survive or waiting to die. It has many of the conventions of the post-apocalypse tale presented in new and impactful ways, with a style and tone that’s really unique to the author.

Essex County, also by Lemire, is really great and distinctive too, while being totally different from ST.

It may be a bit of a wait for the part 2 video, as I do my own music but currently don’t have access to the means to make more. Speaking of which, the last song — with the whistling in it — is called “Our Little Hybrid”, directly inspired by the character/story/concept.

Gratitude and respect to Mr. Lemire.

Random Sketch: Wild Horse

I decided it would be good practice to, once in a while, draw something I am not used to drawing or even that I have never drawn at all before, without any reference.

So here’s my first entry  in this series.  The only time I distinctly remember drawing a horse is when I was probably about 12 or 14 years old, and I cheated by copying a Frank Frazetta drawing.  My conscience is greatly eased by the fact that the jerk I did it for — a grown man who acted like a friend to my family and me — tricked me into labeling it in a way that looked like he’d drawn it once he cropped my signature away.  It was for a newspaper ad.

I’m sure that’s not the only time I’ve ever rendered a horse, but anyway it’s rare enough to warrant entry into this series.  And I know I have definitely never drawn a horse rearing or with an expression of fear like this one.  I guess part of the exercise is that it also has to be an interesting or dramatic image, not just a perfunctory rendering of the subject.

Horse nerds go easy on me.  I know the proportions are a bit iffy, and I was more or less faking the musculature.

Fondant Skull

My first ever attempt at modelling with fondant, which is kind of like icing.  This piece would not be particularly edible, as I didn’t really create “sterile” conditions to work on it.

There will be edibility in the future, though.  Hoping to do some things for Halloween.

Next, I experiment with coloring fondant.  Stay tuned.

Edit — Someone asked me how big the skull was, which was about the time it occurred to me that I should have had a coin or something in there for scale.  So for anyone who is curious, it was about 1.25″ to 1.5″.

Mutterings From The Marsh: Prints At Fan Expo

I will have prints of a few of the pieces on this blog, including Bert Of The Dead and Brock Samson, for sale this weekend at Fan Expo.  I’ll be there with Geoff Isaac,  selling his Sci-Fi cookbook It Came From The Kitchen, which I illustrated.
